Upgrade of hangars?

Can hangars be upgraded without it being sold first and then bying a new one? This requires selling the plane as well, as the hangar can only be sold when empty.

Unfortunately you have to sell the hangar and plane if you want to replace the hangar.

Do we have to upgrade the hanger, the game appears to let me have any plane in the level 2 hanger? what is the advantage of having a higher level hanger? (it says speeds up maintenance of plans on the runway)

Sorry if this is obvious, but I have clearly missed it.

You can house any type of plane within any level hangar, so if you can avoid it, don't sell your lower-level hangars.

The advantage of having higher level hangars is that they will let you refuel/load your planes (and guest planes) faster. For example, a Level 2 hangar will let you refuel and load your propeller planes faster, so you can get them up and away faster.
