We got our Laundry built, and had our first Giant flight, and it came back in need of repair (of course). There was no option to use something to speed up the repair, like normal - only pay two greenies. Is this the way it is with Giant flights - no way to speed up the repair?

Nope, and for me personally it seems like every two to three flights it needs repair. I don't spend the greens, I just let it repair overnight.
